that's another thing i wanna mention. dubstep.  or, bwomp (bass w/o musical preference).

this concept was created during a dubstep set (during Widdler's bootleg of Make It Rain, to be precise).  in 07 i started dancing primarily to breakcore and faster styles of idm.  this turned my liquid and digits styles towards builds because they allowed me sharp, punchy, complex motions to keep up with the music that sounded exactly that way.  then in the winter of 08 to 09, i started feeling bwomp styles more on the dance tip.  what i found though was that taking my current dance ideas at the time, and simply slowing them down from 200bpm to 140bpm or 90bpm didnt feel right.  the motions could not simply be conformed to meet a new genre with drastically different rhythms and slower tempos. it just felt awkward.  it's for this reason why i think levers was made--to suit the music that inspired it.

Just read through the thread. I've been doing something similar for a while now, while it's not the same it does involve a pendulum/swinging motion and a sort of simple increase/decrease of isolating different body parts. All the while I assumed it to be a Botting concept. I never thought to grasp the connection and rotate around that so props for that idea - there's massive body-twisty illusion potential right there.

As per this whole Liquid debate (if my opinion matters at all) I'm kinda torn. I'm all for the evolution of styles and pushing new limits/concepts while at the same time I feel Liquid should look like Liquid. I prob come across as a Liquid purist (ironic term considering the origins of Liquid and the struggle of independence from the arguable ancestral funk styles). But I'll usually come across this way when I attempt to explain the style to new students/laypeople. Difficult enough explaining Popping/Waving/Liquid. "Ohhh so Liquid looks fluid and it is continuous but it's different from Waving.. that guy isn't very fluid he looks more like a robot... can that be Liquid too?" Funny how a Waver will look more "Liquid" than a Liquid dancer sometimes.

That's just me in regards to newcomers. Because if the "Liquid elite" can have so many differing opinions on what constitutes our style, then we've got a hell of a task passing that on to the new generation.

Anyway, you can never please everybody, so props again for pushing the style and adding new concepts, 1 day my dream for a United Liquid Nations with a structured method of teaching foundation will exist. Or maybe it was never meant to be. In the meantime I will keep dancing and doing what feels good.

there should be a rule somewhere that claims of '...done for years' have to be validated w/a clip. it's really a worthless statement to throw out there, otherwise, doesn't add to the discussion at all except to detract from someone's accomplishments. at least if there's a clip, it's sharing ideas and seeing other peoples' interpretions

I don't think there has to be clips up because I've seen it myself. A lot of his videos he puts up are choreographed. He does have a lot of stuff he is willing to share in person anywhere and anytime. He is definitely inspired by the flexxers and has said it numerous times.

but i dont think he saw me or tmy doing it in order to come up with it, just like we didnt see him.

I agree with this. Phillip is a choreographer so he does take moves and tries to create pieces with them, some for teaching at studios and others he adds to his arsenal for battles. This isn't to discredit Kai just like you guys aren't discrediting Phillip. I'm merely explaining for him.

I've been trying some things with levers and think they are right at home under the liquid umbrella......At first the swing mechanic seemed robotic until I realized they were hinge based ....not gears...

Wooden Hydraulic Machines Kit from ThinkGeek

hydraulic excavators work off the same movements..the arms have 3 hinges..no latch but you do get a get a sharp cylinder lock when you fully extend or release the controls..the center pivot point......rotates 360 degrees....mechanical movements made possible by liquids ....

Pistons and sleeves

I think levers alongside some hydraulic stops could go along way towards animating liquid without using borrowed styles..our own techniques used on our own concepts...which has been on my mind lately......maybe even throw in some drifting inertia based flows...if that idea survives the breakdown to mechanics .........

I know levers has......I've worked on them enough the past few weeks for my brother to call me out on 'em (he said it looked like I was swinging nun-chucks)......I'm even picturing hand levers....thinkin' they might look like Skywalkers wrist rotating folds he uses with his threads...we'll see
